Developer Fields are something new introduced by Garmin for encoding into the final FIT file. The aim of these developer fields is to support a wide range of data types, facilitating seamless integration into the final output.
Here’s why this feature is significant:
Our latest app update introduces a feature called “Visual Intervals” or “Zones Based Color Coded Intervals.” This feature adds a dynamic element to your workout graphs, transitioning from the simple blue background for interval bars to one which is a color-coded representation based on your power zones.
Before diving into the new feature, let’s quickly recap what power zones are. Power zones are specific intensity ranges that correlate with your fitness level and goals. They help you understand and manage your effort during workouts, whether you’re running, cycling, or engaging in any other form of exercise.
With the Visual Intervals feature, your workout graphs come to life with vibrant colors, representing different power zones. Each zone is assigned a distinct color, making it easy to determine the intensity levels of workouts at a glance from the workout library.
Give the new Visual Interface a try.
We’re thrilled to announce a new feature as part of our Garmin Connect connected account integration! This feature is designed to enhance your experience and give you more control over your activity data. Here’s what you can expect:
Now, you have the option to back up your completed activities and workouts saved in Garmin Connect. Whether it’s a workout recorded by a Garmin device or uploaded from a third-party source, you can securely store them in your Dropbox account. This ensures that your valuable activity data is safe and accessible whenever you need it.
Backup will be saved into Dropbox -> Apps -> BreakAway -> GarminBackup
We understand that not all activities are the same. With this feature, you can select whether to back up all your activities or only specific ones, such as virtual activities (like virtual runs or rides) that are recorded from non-Garmin devices. This flexibility allows you to manage your data efficiently.
In addition to Dropbox backup, you can also enable the sync of your completed activities from Garmin Connect to other connected accounts, such as Intervals.icu. This seamless integration ensures that your data is available across platforms for a more comprehensive fitness tracking experience.
While syncing activities to connected accounts, we recommend selecting specific activities. For instance, it’s ideal to sync virtual activities (recorded on non-Garmin devices) to connected accounts like Intervals.icu, as they may not be relevant for all your fitness goals.
By enabling the backup of Garmin activities into Dropbox, you gain access to the original FIT files. This means you can subsequently upload these FIT files to any other fitness platforms of your choice. This flexibility allows you to use your data in various ways, empowering you to make the most of your fitness journey.
With these new features, we aim to give you more control, flexibility, and convenience when managing your activity data. Your fitness journey just got a whole lot more adaptable and secure.
To get started, simply follow the instructions in the “Connected Accounts for Garmin Connect” section of the BreakAway app, and take full advantage of these new capabilities.
If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to our support team. We’re here to make your fitness experience as seamless as possible. Enjoy your workouts, and stay connected with BreakAway!
Once you’ve enabled Garmin Connect and authenticated, presuming that you already have either Dropbox or Intervals.icu connected, you will see a “Sync Now” button. Pressing this will start the process of backing up your last 10 activities.

How To Get Started
Go to SETTINGS, scroll down to “Connected Accounts” and tap Connect With Garmin
You will be presented with this screen, where you can slide the “Enable Garmin Connect” switch to ON. You will be presented with a Login Form. Note that we do not transmit your Username/Password to anywhere except Garmin Connect and we will store the Username/Password combo in the iOS secure keychain so that we can seamlessly enable all these feature).
That’s It. That’s all there is to do if you only want to upload completed workouts to Garmin. If you want to also assign gears automatically, Read On!
How to Assign Gears Automatically
This 2nd portion will need you to tap the “Enable Garmin Gears” option in the above picture. In the below picture, you can see that some Default Gears has already been defined. You can define these gears based on the specific sports you’re doing. Ready? Let’s Add Some Default Gears! Tap that button!
When you tap the “Add Default Gears For Sports” Button, it will lead to a screen where it will present to you a list of gears which you maintain within Garmin Connect. (Note that any Gear Retirement / Addition / Renaming will still need to be done within Garmin Connect)
First, Let’s Choose a Sport. Tap on the “Garmin Sport” and select your Sport (as shown on the right side picture). Once done, return to the previous screen using the back button.
Here, you select the gears to be associated with this sport.
You’re Done! You’ve successfully assigned a Default Gear for a sport. The next time you completed a workout in BreakAway, once uploaded, it will also automatically assign these default gears. Happy Camper!
Next, let’s see how you can also automatically assign gears to workouts executed on your Garmin Watch and which is synced to Intervals.icu.
If you’ve enabled Intervals.icu, you might notice the little Intervals.icu logo on your screen. Tap it. This will then show the “Week In Review” feature based on data sync’ed from Intervals.icu.
Within this “Week In Review” screen, whenever you update the data in BreakAway by tapping on the sync button on the top right, it will download any new data and if it has a Garmin Connect ID associated with it, BreakAway will do it’s magic and determine if there is a need to automatically assign default gears to it. No Interactions Necessary!
What about if you want to edit some of the associated gears? Perhaps add what jersey you’re wearing on that workout. (I like tracking exactly how durable my jerseys are! Makes me feel that I’m using it to my money’s worth!). Just tap on a calendar entry for that activity. It will look something like the below. (those with the small intervals logo means it’s tappable
This will lead you to a new screen showing workout details for that particular activity. But that’s not the goal of this post. Let me show you how you can add new info or edit the existing info to this activity.
The picture on the left is the activity detail view. Zoom in on the upper right and you shall see three “…” elipsis. Tap that for a new menu as can be seen on the right pic. Tap on Edit, which presents you with this screen where you can assign your RPE / Feel and all the way a the bottom, select or deselect any gears which you want to associate or disassociate with this activity.
Once you’re done, click save and it will be sync’ed.
If you wish to enable Edits such as Name / Desc / RPE / Feel back to Garmin Connect, please be sure to slide these switches to ON during your intervals.icu setup.
That’s It!

We’re excited to introduce a brand new feature that takes your BreakAway: Indoor Training app experience to the next level! With this update, we’re making it easier than ever to connect and sync your workout data with Apple Health, as well as other connected accounts like Intervals.icu. Here’s what you need to know about the latest enhancements:
1. Apple Health Integration
Now, you can seamlessly link your BreakAway app with Apple Health, allowing you to effortlessly share your workout and health data. This integration opens up a world of possibilities for tracking and managing your fitness journey.
2. Customizable Data Selection
We understand that not everyone wants to share every piece of health data. That’s why we’ve made it easy for you to choose which Apple Health parameters you want BreakAway to access. Select the metrics that matter most to you, and we’ll handle the rest.
3. Silent Omission for Opted-Out Parameters
For added privacy and convenience, if you decide not to enable certain parameters for syncing, BreakAway will silently omit them from the synchronization process. Rest assured that your choices are respected, and your data remains as private as you want it to be.
4. Sync Destinations
Currently, Intervals.icu is the primary destination for your synchronized data. But here’s the exciting part: you have full control over which parameters are sent to Intervals.icu. However, please note that the selected parameters must already be among your chosen Wellness Fields in Intervals.icu for the sync to work seamlessly.
5. User-Friendly Alerts
We believe in making your experience as smooth as possible. If any of your chosen fields are missing in Intervals.icu, we’ll promptly alert you with a user-friendly pop-up message. This ensures that you always know what’s happening with your data.
How to Get Started
Linking your app to Apple Health and syncing your workout data to various connected accounts is easy:
6. Do Take note that parameters selected to be sync also has to already be available within Interval.icu. There would be a prompt indicating which column is missing otherwise.
7. If you decide that you want to limit/increase the amount of parameters which BreakAway has access to. You can navigate within Apple’s Settings App SETTINGS -> Privacy & Security -> Health -> BreakAway and you will see this screen.
Note:
Write Permission is needed if you would like BreakAway to update Apple Health with your workout data from BreakAway: Indoor Training so that you can get credit for and close your rings.
Changes includes the addition of W’ Bal(kJ) in similar fashion as what you see on intervals.icu. You can turn ON/OFF this field within “Advanced Options” (in future, this will likely pull the WPrime values directly from intervals.icu and auto-populate/update but for now it’s manual)
If you have an iPad, you can also have the ability to get the App to load in a Split Screen configuration.
This is how it works.
User preference on ability to Announce the next Intervals via spoken audio. (and also announce any custom interval cues present in the MRC/ERG file) eg:
Prepare For Next Interval
Power Target – 120 to 150w
Interval Duration – 30seconds
Keep RPM steady at 80 – 90rpm
We also support Time Based / Scheduled based audio cues where you can ask the app to announce the cues ( based on your preference) to periodically announce some of the current workout’s data. This feature request comes from some of our Visually Challenged athletes and has been very well received by them.
Different trainers would have different level of reaction time from the instance the interval power changes from say 100w to 120w. Some trainers take 2 seconds, some trainers up to 10seconds. All these reaction time is actually a good thing as, similar in real life, you don’t instantly go from 0% slope to 5% slope and then you basically grind to a halt.
However, it is also understandable that users may want to tweak the trainer lag so that the interval data (lap data) line up based on the intended timing. In this case, if you know the approximate reaction time of your trainer, you can utilise this feature to compensate (or anticipate early) and the app will send the command for the next interval just a few seconds earlier.
User defined Trainer Lag compensation. (Up to 10secs). Assuming that your trainer has a lag time of 4secs, putting it at 4secs, the app will send the Next Power Target (Slope% or Watt) per the structured workout to the smart trainer 4 seconds earlier so it will sync to the Next Lap Start.
Power Matching is available via 2 options within the Settings Tab.
A Fixed Power Match. Meaning the user will input a known offset between the outdoor Power Meter and the Indoor Trainer.
An adaptive Power Match where the app will continuously monitor and change the power match offset target and apply it accordingly.
Chart below shows -5w (refer to the match icon)
An example of power match through the different intervals.
The adaptive offset can also be user tweaked between 0% (no offset), 100%(center of the peaks and valleys of your outdoor power meter values) up to 200%
For my case, I found that 130% is the best fit for my pedaling style and my trainer.
Note that the accuracy of your outdoor power meter and your pedaling style will greatly influence the amount of “power offset” to be applied. The greater your power meter’s accuracy level, there could be a greater amount of power variations as well.
